Attention Boilermakers: Have you seen this logo around Purdue’s campus and didn’t scan the QR code? You missed out on an experience that many students have proclaimed as “the best time of their semester”. 👇 Our team (William Zollman, Jenna Lusk, and I) crafted a mystery Alternate Reality Game (ARG) deeply woven into Purdue’s history for vigilant students that needed a well-deserved study break. Over three hundred Purdue students participated in our experience to expose a fictitious club named KONTRA, the most exclusive club on campus. With an unusually large amount of influence over high profile organizations, they keep order by consuming and taking control of members’ lives which include Ruben, our story’s protagonist. Players slowly see Ruben fall deeper and deeper under the control of KONTRA. When faced with the sinister truth, his attempt to find the truth of KONTRA results in his life being ruined. Players were presented with interactive challenges involving Purdue’s campus and history to uncover evidence of KONTRA’s wrongdoings and to make decisions of their own. Together, they sifted through blog posts on an abandoned version of the MyPurdue student portal written by our protagonist with clues to find the locations of NFC tags at historical campus landmarks. One of the challenges that I was deeply proud of was the Leadership challenge, which created clans of players that introduced interesting social and group dynamics we hadn’t considered before. Personally, it was my favorite part of the project: bringing people together in the real world and creating relationships that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Weeks ago, our team held an event to debrief all players and reward our top participants with laser-engraved wood plaques with their in-game name and achievements. We presented data visualizations of player interactions and held a Q&A to give them a better understanding of the story and why we created the project in the first place. Having a basic understanding of game theory has served me well throughout my professional career. I think we should all thank Bob Barker and Drew Carey for making it accessible to everyone. Game theory was introduced to me at a very young age, but I didn’t truly understand it for what it was. Then, several years after graduating from college, I found myself working in a lab adorned with a large TV for displaying briefings and various dashboards. During lunch hours, this TV transformed from a tool of productivity to a medium of communal engagement. “The Price is Right,” with its colorful array of games and contestants’ strategies, became a daily ritual that none of us wanted to miss. As we watched, our conversations naturally veered towards the game theory aspects of the show. We debated over bidding strategies, dissected the games, and bonded over what we perceived as the contestants’ strategic blunders. These lunchtime sessions, filled with banter and “insightful” observations, opened my eyes to the practical applications of game theory in real-world scenarios. It was fascinating to see how the principles of game theory, often perceived as abstract and confined to academic textbooks, were vividly illustrated in a game show format. This experience enhanced our team dynamics and sharpened my understanding of strategic decision-making, a skill I found immensely valuable in my software engineering career. “The Price is Right” can be an engaging and unconventional guide to understanding game theory and its application in software engineering. From the bidding strategies in the “One Bid” round to the risk assessment in “Plinko,” the show offers a treasure trove of lessons relevant to the challenges and decisions we face in the tech world. #gametheory #programming #lunchandlearn https://lnkd.in/eG7SkNJb

Chip away at some video game development - my recent avenue of development in creativity. One thing I like about it, is there's lots of depth to it and lots of different areas that you can focus your mind on and you always come away from it understanding a little bit more. For example, you think of the physics engine of a modern game development engine, then when you're learning things about how it works, then you'll find yourself referencing non-game dev websites about physics, just by simply referencing functions and it's the same with mathematics and then there's the logic of the code and how you make it all work together. It's a healthy, and enjoyable workout for the mind. I might only do on average 15 minutes per day, but how much do you think I now know and understand about it before I started 7 months ago?

Thrilled to unveil one of the projects I finished the last semester at the University of Florida – the Minesweeper Game! This venture into game development using C++ and SFML has been an incredible learning experience, and I'm eager to share the results with you. The project boasts a dynamic board generation feature, allowing users to tailor their gaming experience with variable dimensions. It brings the classic Minesweeper game to life, offering diverse difficulty levels and challenging puzzles. Crafting an intuitive user interface was a key focus. Welcoming windows greet players, and interactive text input adds a personal touch. The design ensures a smooth onboarding process, making the game accessible and enjoyable for all. One of the highlights is the implementation of a recursive algorithm for tile revealing. This not only enhances gameplay but also adds depth and complexity to the overall gaming experience. SFML (Simple and Fast Multimedia Library) played a pivotal role, handling graphics rendering and user input seamlessly. It allowed me to concentrate on refining game logic and mechanics, providing a robust foundation for the project. The development process posed various challenges, requiring adept management of game state transitions. Overcoming these obstacles provided valuable opportunities to sharpen problem-solving skills and delve into the intricacies of game development. #GameDevelopment #SFML #Minesweeper #universityofflorida

When was the last time you experienced Flow? You know, that feeling when you lose track of time and find immense satisfaction in what you are doing. It can can happen (if you're lucky), in your work, and definitely in your play - in sports, games, or other engrossing activities such as making. In games-based learning, designers are often specifically aiming to create flow experiences, because this is the state in which which humans perform best - including taking on board new knowledge, skills or ideas - in other words, when they are learning - which can itself induce flow.
